KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (KKMM) has no power to act if the individual involved in breaking the embargo on the Felda White Paper is not a civil servant, the Dewan Rakyat was told yesterday.

However, Deputy Minister Eddin Syazlee Shith said action would be taken by the relevant authorities.

“As far as civil servants are concerned, we always give emphasis on the matter and it is in our priority (not to break embargo).

“But if it is done by someone who is not a government employee and who obviously wants to manipulate the situation, then the matter is not in our control.

“I believe that the relevant authorities will take the necessary action,” he said when replying to a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan (BN-Pontian) during question time.

It was reported that Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali had proposed for stern action to be taken against former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for breaking the embargo on the White Paper on ‘Towards the Sustainability of Felda’.

Earlier, when replying to the original question from Datuk Dr Abd Latiff Ahmad (BN-Mersing) on the ministry’s move to address the leakage of personal data involving the service sector, Eddin Syazlee said the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (Act 709) was enforced on Nov 15, 2013, to regulate the processing of personal data in commercial transactions.

“Each data user (the company that processes personal data for such commercial transactions) is obliged to comply with the Personal Data Protection Principles in handling personal data of the data subject (personal data owner) to avoid it being misused,” he said.

He said under Act 709, each data user was required to be registered and up to February this year, 13,739 data users had been registered.

If failed to do so, data user is liable to a fine of up to RM500,000 or to be jailed a maximum of three years or both upon conviction, he said. — Bernama
