MARUDI: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas welcomes Assistant Minister of Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil’s proposal for the development of an Agro Park in Marudi.

“If they have the land (to build the Agro Park), why not? Then, there will be more opportunities for people in the interior areas to further develop the agricultural industry. I am asking Datu Dr Penguang to look into that,” Uggah told reporters when met after officiating the closing ceremony of Baram Agrofest at Marudi Town Square here today.

Penguang, who is Marudi assemblyman, had expressed hope during his speech at the closing ceremony of Baram Agrofest today for the Land and Survey Department to identify a suitable land in Marudi for the purpose of building the Agro Park.

He also requested Uggah to consider building collection centres for agricultural and livestock products in Marudi and in Beluru.

In responding to the request, Uggah, who is Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development, said once the Agro Park is built, the state government will also look at building of collection, processing and packaging centre (CPPC) so that whatever produce that the people in Marudi and Beluru have, they can be properly processed and packed.

“Our objective is to make Sarawak a net exporter of food products by 2030. So, we have to prepare the products so they will meet the international standards and requirements.

“So that is why we need the CPPC. It is so that we can work out things with proper management and packaging,” said Uggah, adding that they have welcomed proposals for CPPC in Baram parliamentary constituency with the first one in Long Lama.

“We are studying the requests (for CPPC) for Marudi and Beluru,” he added.
