KUCHING: Terengganu State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Yahaya Ali says the House has a lot to learn from its counterpart in Sarawak, which is the oldest DUN in the country.

He said he was very impressed with some of the practices and facilities of Sarawak DUN, and hoped to adopt some to address the shortcomings of Terengganu DUN.

“This is my first visit to Sarawak. After learning about how Sarawak DUN is managed and how proceedings are conducted, we can pick up a lot from Sarawak DUN,” he told a press conference at the DUN Complex here following a courtesy call on Sarawak DUN Speaker Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar yesterday.

Among those present were Yahaya’s wife Zarani Othman and Mohd Asfia’s wife Datin Amar Fatimah Mohd Iskandar.

Yahaya, who is leading a six-member delegation on a working visit to Sarawak, arrived in the city on Saturday. The delegates are flying back to their home state today (April 16).

“We discussed how to enhance our (Terengganu DUN) proceedings, to be more organised and digitalised so as to better meet the aspiration and purpose of having the proceedings, and to benefit the people as a whole.”

Yahaya said the discussion with Mohd Asfia also touched on the setting-up of the select committee, a matter which could be looked into by Terengganu DUN.

“Apart from that, there are also ordinances that we can study because Sarawak DUN is the oldest in the country, and Mohd Asfia is an experienced Speaker whom we can learn a lot from,” he added.

Meanwhile, when asked on what to expect in the next Sarawak DUN sitting, expected to be held from April 29 to May 9, Mohd Asfia said he would announce the matter in detail after the forthcoming pre-Council meeting.
