KUCHING: The Welfare Department has sent assistance to Uma Bawang, an Orang Ulu longhouse in Sg Asap resettlement scheme in Belaga which was razed by fire on Monday evening.

Minister of Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said the Welfare Department at the divisional level would always be alerted of any kind of disaster.

“We have the disaster relief committee at the divisional level and when such disaster happens, action will be taken by the committee,” said Fatimah when asked about the assistance rendered by the Welfare Department at a press conference on ‘Drugs and Substance Abuses and Love Scams’ at her office in Baitulmakmur Building here yesterday.

“Assistance based on headcounts can last the victims for a week and if supplies are running out, further assistance will be sent.

“Other forms of assistance such as cash will also be given to the victims to enable them to buy clothes, kitchen utensils and uniforms for school children” she added.

Besides that, she said the department also provides victims who lost their homes a temporary place to stay.

She also said the Uma Bawang longhouse will be rebuilt, and grants of RM5,000 will be given to each ‘bilek’(unit).

“The grant given is to build their ‘bilek’ later,” she added.
