KUCHING: A pedestrian, who was knocked down by a motorcycle at Jalan Kulas on Tuesday afternoon, died at the Sarawak General Hospital around 8pm that day.

Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu identified the deceased as Hatta Mohamad Ramlee, 47, from Petra Jaya.

“Investigations revealed that the deceased was crossing at the zebra crossing at Jalan Kulas when he was hit by the motorcycle, which was heading to Jalan P Ramlee from the Satok bridge,” Alexson said in a statement yesterday.

Both Hatta and the 22-year-old motorcyclist were taken to Sarawak General Hospital for treatment.

As at press time, the motorcyclist, who is a chef, had yet to regain consciousness and was being treated at the hospital’s yellow zone.

Alexson said the case is being probed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

The Section provides for between two and 10 years in jail, and a fine of between RM5,000 and RM20,000.
