MIRI: A total of 426 new applications for electricity supply have been received from 25 villages and longhouses in Bekenu constituency.

Bekenu assemblywoman Rosey Yunus said the applications were for new resettlement areas, new houses and rebuilt burnt-down longhouses.

“These are the three types of applications forwarded by the people in Bekenu constituency to Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB),” Rosey said during a briefing on additional and delayed projects at Subis District Office yesterday.

Present were Assistant Minister of Rural Electricity Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, SEB Northern Region manager Tan Joo Kok, Pemanca Ali Mudin and other community leaders in Bekenu and Niah.

According to Rosey, the applications were still in process.

On other note, she called on SEB to install street lighting at strategic locations and road bends, junctions of kampungs and longhouses in Bekenu constituency to brighten up the places at night to prevent accidents.

She regretted that the solar lighting near the Tusan beach road and near the town area had been vandalised.

On the briefing, she said it was an opportunity for community leaders and village heads to bring up the needs of their villages and longhouses.

She advised village heads to ensure that every household in their village or longhouse are connected to electricity supply.

Earlier, Tan informed that SEB had action plans to minimise power outage in Bekenu constituency.
