BINTULU: A foreign man was arrested by police at a house in Sebauh early yesterday for illegally possessing a homemade shotgun and a cartridge.

District police chief Supt Zulkipli Suhaili said the suspect, 52, was detained after he failed to produce a valid permit for the firearm and ammunition.

“An investigation found the shotgun did not have a serial number.

“The suspect claimed to have bought it from a fellow foreigner after the latter left the country in 2017,” he said yesterday.

Zulkipli said police have classified the case under Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960 for possessing or carrying arms and ammunition without an arms licence or arms permit, which carries a maximum jail term of seven years or fine, or both, if convicted.

In addition, he said the suspect is also being investigated under Section 6(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not having any valid travel documents.

If convicted, the suspect could be fined not more than RM10,000 or jailed up to five years, or both, and also caned.
