MIRI: The Miri Youth Association worked with the Youth and Sports Department
as well as several non-governmental organisations to bring food aid to Uma Bawang fire victims in Sungai Asap, Belaga on Friday.

Chairman Matassan Rohani thanked the volunteers who joined the community service programme.

“The volunteers who were involved in the programme were Fitness Evolution, Infinite Exploration, a Muslim charity body – Pekida (Malaysian Islamic Propagation and Welfare Organisation) MAB branch, Nasi Ulam Kampung 833, Uma Ukeh Youth Club, and Belaga Youth Club,” he said.

Matassan said during the visit, the volunteers were informed that the fire victims need building materials to build temporary shelter.

The items required were three- and four-inch nails, saws, hammers, and measuring tape.

The fire on Monday broke out when most of the residents were out working, destroying two blocks comprising 42 doors, leaving 499 people homeless.

Most of the fire victims are now either in temporary shelter or staying with relatives nearby.
