Car theft suspect caught in the act

BINTULU: A 35-year-old local man suspected to be involved in car theft was detained by police while in the midst of dismantling the components of a car on Monday.

Bintulu police chief Supt Zulkipli Suhaili said the suspect was spotted by policemen dismantling the car parts at an open space along Bintulu-Miri coastal road around 6.30pm.

The suspect being arrested after trying to escape.

When approached by policemen, the suspect tried to run away but was apprehended.

“Further check on the car found it was stolen on April 18 at the road side of Tanjung Kidurong area.

“Police also found various types of tools in the car such as spanner, screwdrivers, a knife, a hacksaw and others,” said Zulkipli, adding that the suspect also tested positive for drugs and is currently remanded for further investigation.

The case is investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code for vehicle theft, which provides for an imprisonment for a term of not less than one year and not more than seven years, upon conviction.
