KAPIT: Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai has expressed deep gratitude to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg for his concern and sympathy for the fire victims at Bakun Resettlement Scheme, Sungai Asap in Belaga.

On Tuesday, the Chief Minister announced a contribution of RM70,000 to each family to help them rebuild their houses that were gutted in the fire, which also resulted in heavy loss of property and personal documents.

The contribution will go to 116 families comprising 44 families in Uma Bawang which was razed by fire on April 15 this year; 30 families in Uma Bakung which burned down on Nov 19 last year; 15 families in Uma Badeng which was gutted on June 29 this year; and 27 families in Uma Asmidy Agau, Long Urun that was razed on May 1, 2016.

The contribution is channelled through the State Disaster Management Committee chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

The chief minister made the announcement on Tuesday at a press conference after chairing the 6th Sarawak Development Coordination Committee Meeting here.

Chukpai, on behalf of the fire victims, thanked Abang Johari for his kindness in approving the funds to help the fire victims. He added without government assistance, it would be an uphill challenge for the fire victims to rebuild their homes.
