Wong seeking collaboration in agriculture

KUCHING: Minister of International Trade and E-Commerce Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, who is presently representing Sarawak at the Belt and Road CEO Conference in Beijing China, has met up with officials from the office of deputy director of the Centre for International Agriculture Research to look into the viability of collaboration and technology transfer.

Mooted by Wong, the proposed Modern Agriculture Technology Park in Kuching/Samarahan has been approved by the Sarawak government, and a signing ceremony of the project is scheduled to take place at the conference on April 25.

President of China, Xi Jinping, is expected to officiate at the opening ceremony of the conference while Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is among the world leaders invited to the global event.  The Agriculture Technology Park is a collaboration between Jiangxi Huamei Food Industry Limited Company and Zongyah Haoxiang International Sdn Bhd, and has attracted the attention of the Centre for International Agricultural Research.

With state-of-the-art technology and information system in agriculture as well as confidence from investors, China is capable of assisting Sarawak promote the park and other relevant collaborations.

Deputy director of the Centre for International Agriculture Research, Zhao Ruixue, said an office dealing with overseas matters has been set up to promote all projects under the Belt and Road Initiatives.

She hoped that the park in Sarawak can help enhance the production of tropical fruits and processing technology in the state.  Towards this end, research director of the Centre for International Agriculture Research, Zhang Xuebiao, and his officers are expected to conduct a working visit to Sarawak next month.

Wong hoped that the agriculture development in Sarawak will be brought to a new level and that the park will develop in a smooth manner and subsequently work on the production of Halal food.  He said the Halal food products in Malaysia had gained global recognition and the park in Sarawak will be able to promote Halal food products to Middle East countries.

In addition, Wong and the Sarawak delegation have also been invited on a tour to Beijing Chunyi Aviation Technology Company Limited to gain an understanding on the technology and production of drones.
