KUCHING: The National Agriculture Bureau of China is keen to visit the Land of the Hornbills to explore opportunities to help Sarawak develop its agriculture sector.

The mainland Chinese bureau had affirmed its intention of paying a courtesy call on Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas in the city end of May this year.

This was revealed by Minister of International Trade and E-Commerce Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, who attended the Belt and Road CEO Conference in Beijing recently.

According to Wong, who is Second Finance Minister, the National Agriculture Bureau of China will write an official letter to Uggah’s office to make an appointment next month.

“I was in Beijing (on Wednesday) for the Belt and Road CEO Conference. The National Agriculture Bureau in Beijing is interested in having a discussion with our Deputy Chief Minister who is Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture (Native Land and Regional Development) to help Sarawak by way of agriculture improvements.

“It so happened that I was in Beijing for the conference and they (the Bureau) wanted to meet me, saying that they will visit Datuk Amar Uggah end of May,” he said in a phone call yesterday.

Wong said the National Agriculture Bureau of China is into research and that the mainland Chinese counterparts had ample innovative know-how and expertise to share with Sarawak.

“They want me to extend their intent to come to see our Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Uggah,” he added.
