Cambodian job scam: Sixth suspect charged with two counts of cheating

KUCHING: The sixth suspect in the Cambodian job scam Mohd Ghaffar Abd Jamal, 26, has been charged with two counts of cheating in two Magistrates’ Courts here today.

Mohd Ghaffar, who was charged for cheating two Sarawakians, aged 21 years old and 26 years old, pleaded not guilty to both charges.

He was accused of cheating the first victim at a housing estate in Jalan Matang on Sept, last year and the second victim at a house in Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg on Nov 22, last year.

The accused’s lawyer, Fadzillah Osman applied to the court for the accused to be released on bail considering that he has to help his mother in an eatery, besides the fact that he will not be able to travel overseas considering that his passport has been detained by the court for the time being.

Magistrate Nuruhuda Mohd Yusof allowed the accused to be released on RM5,000 bail with two local sureties and fixed May 29 as the date for case management.

The court also ordered the accused’s passport to be detained until the trial has completed.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecution Muhammad Hafiz Musa.

In a separate court, Magistrate Mohd Syukri Mokhtar also allowed the accused to be released on RM3,000 bail with two sureties who consisted of his family members.

Mohd Syukri also ordered Mohd Ghaffar to report to the nearest police station once in a fortnight until the the case management on May 13.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nadratun Naim Mohd Saidi.

Mohd Ghaffar, who was remanded under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code, last week, was charged with two counts under Section 415(b) of the Penal Code.

If convicted, he can be punished according to Section 417 of the same code which provides for a jail term of up to 5 years or a fine or both.

Mohd Ghaffar was arrested by the police upon arriving at Kuching International Airport on April 25.

All the 47 Malaysians, including 40 from Sarawak, who were released from the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Prison in Cambodia, arrived in Malaysia on Feb 17.
