Members of MMU Grüne Welt celebrate their feat of winning the ‘Circular Economy Award’ at Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2019.

SEPANG: The Malaysian team won the inaugural ‘Circular Economy Award’ during Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2019, which concluded at Sepang International Circuit (SIC) in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.

MMU Grüne Welt from Multimedia University Melaka Campus won US$3,000 in one of the off-track awards, through the design of their vehicle integrating the concept of ‘circular economy’ in its manufacturing and incorporating an assessment method to analyse environmental impacts.

“We learned from our failure last year as we had not been able to get even a valid run. All our hard work and efforts finally paid off. I hope more Malaysian teams would participate in Shell Eco-Marathon Asia in the upcoming years. Don’t let your failures discourage you,” enthused team manager Athmas Thum.

Circular Economy Award was introduced to recognise the team that demonstrated ‘circular economy’-thinking in the concept, design and function of their vehicle; and also to motivate students to integrate the concept of ‘circular economy’ in engineering of materials, products and services for real-life industrial and consumer solutions.

Other off-track awards recognising student’s excellence in various areas included ‘Communications Award’ (KMUTT E-Drive Revolution from King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Thailand); ‘Technical Innovation Award’ (GUC Innovators from German University in Cairo, Egypt); ‘Vehicle Design (Prototype) Award’ (AVERERA from Indian Institute of Technology-Banaras Hindu University); ‘Vehicle Design (UrbanConcept) Award’ (Nanyang E Drive from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore); ‘Safety Award’ (CUT Eco-Racing from Cairo University, Egypt); ‘Hydrogen Newcomer Award’ (ITS Team 5 from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, Indonesia) and ‘Perseverance & Spirit of the Event Award’ (S.U Racing Team from Satbayev Kazakh National Technical University, Kazakhstan).

Each winning team took home US$3,000 and a trophy.
