KUCHING: Centre of Technical Excellence (Centexs), which was established by Sarawak government through Yayasan Sarawak in 2014, is cooperating with Huawei in skills training in digital fields.

Its chief executive officer Syeed Mohd Hussien Wan Abdul Rahman said a number of digital data courses are now provided by the centre for students interested in this line.

“Students can obtain international certification issued by Huawei (upon completion of the course),” he said at the Centex and Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) Safari  (Centexs-SMA Safari) at Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, Batu Kawa on Saturday.

Commenting further, Syeed Mohd Hussein said Centexs currently offers 28 courses in six fields, including oil and gas, electronics and ports, construction, textiles and hospitality.

As for electronics, all courses are held for short periods, he added.

Meanwhile, Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also Batu Kawa assemblyman, officiated at the event.

In his speech, Dr Sim said Centexs is one of the several institutions established by the Sarawak government to provide technical training for the people.

He pointed out that institutions such as Centexs not only produce skilled manpower but also provide opportunity to those from low-income families to improve their socio-economy.

“In a way, this also helps to improve the quality of life among the people,” he said.

He added the Sarawak government has been promoting technical, vocational and engineering training (TVET) from the time the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem was the chief minister.

He also said Yayasan Sarawak provides scholarships for deserving Sarawakians to pursue their tertiary education.

“Sarawak government does not neglect those who are unable to continue their studies. It provides them with short-term vocational training courses with the establishment of such technical excellence centre,” he added.

Dr Sim pointed out that through Centexs, students can choose to pursue courses in digital field, cultural heritage, technology, oil and gas and electronics, and then obtain internationally recognised certification upon completion.

Therefore, he hoped that Sarawakians, especially those in rural areas, would grasp this opportunity offered by the government and enrol in technical courses as a pathway to securing good jobs to uplift their family’s economic standing.

Apart from Batu Kawa, the Centexs-SMA Safari had been held in Mukah, Betong, Lawas, and Lundu.

The Centexs-SMA Safari also comprised outreach programmes to provide greater awareness of digital technology to local communities.

Also present were Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang and Padawan Municipal Council deputy chairman Dato Ahmad Ibrahim.
