MIRI: An unemployed man arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing his two daughters, aged 10 and 12, was yesterday ordered by a Magistrates’ Court here to be remanded for six days.

Magistrate Md Syafique Md Hilmie issued the order after allowing a remand application by investigating officer Insp Clarissa Carol from the Miri Central police station.

In her application, Clarissa said that on Tuesday (May 7), a 48-year-old cleaner made a police report at the Lutong police station.

The complainant claimed at 10am that same day, while working in Senadin, she received a call from her eldest daughter.

The daughter claimed her father was acting indecently towards her two sisters aged 10 and 12 years.

According to the complainant, the incident happened a number of times without her knowledge and she only found out after being told by her daughters.

Acting on information received, around 11.15pm on Tuesday, the police arrested the suspect at his home in Tudan Phase 1 on suspicion of his involvement in the case.

Clarissa said that a seven-day remand under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code was needed on the 51-year-old suspect to enable the police to carry out a thorough investigation under Section 14 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.

Apart from that, she said the police also needed time to collect all evidence as well as medical reports pertaining to the case.

She said if released early, the suspect might harass the victims, who are his own children.

However, Md Syafique only allowed a six-day remand on the suspect, which will end on the coming Tuesday (May 14).
