The two suspects, who were arrested after the chase, are believed to be from Indonesia.

KUCHING: Two male suspects aged 24 and 17 were arrested by the police at a commercial building in Batu Kawa on May 10 for illegal entry into the state and for carrying weapons – police later discovered they were also motorcycle thieves.

According to Padawan District Police chief Supt Aidil Bolhassan, a team from the district’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) was conducting a patrol at Moyan Square, Batu Kawa when they came across the two suspects riding on a motorcycle at around 1.50am.

“The suspects accelerated away upon noticing the police, then suddenly lost their balance and crashed at the side of the road near the Batu Kawa bridge,” said Aidil, who confirmed the arrest today.

Police then alighted from their vehicle and chased the suspects on foot to a nearby commercial building.

“During the chase, one of the suspects threw an object believed to be a weapon at the police,” said Aidil.

The police later found a machete measuring about 38 cm in length, which was believed to be the object that was hurled at them by one of the suspects.

Aidil also revealed that both suspects were from Jagoi Babang, Indonesia.

The tools and weapons that were seized from the suspects

Police also seized various tools from the suspects such as three modified screwdrivers (T-shaped), five spanners, two pliers, one adjustable spanner, one penknife and a pair of scissors.

Four 1.5 litre bottles of petrol were also found in their possession.

Both suspects were arrested and will be investigated under Section 395 and Section 397 of the Penal Code and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1963 – for entering the state without any valid documents.

One of the suspects was also arrested under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.

During the interrogation, one of the suspects admitted that he and his other accomplices – who are still at large – had stolen around 10 motorcycles in Matang, Desa Wira, Batu Kawa, Kota Sentosa, Kota Samarahan since Jan 2019.

The second suspect during the interrogation admitted that he had stolen more than 20 motorcycles in the Kota Samarahan area alone.

Meanwhile, the motorcycle that was ridden by the suspects was using a false licence plate and was reported to be stolen in Kota Samarahan on May 29 last year.
