1,100 illegally felled mangrove logs seized in joint ops

SARIKEI: Marine police together with Forest Department here seized a total of 1,100 felled mangrove logs during a joint operation to curb theft of the timber species on Wednesday.

According to commander of Marine Police (Zone 5) ACP Salehuddin Mat Zaman 500 mangrove logs of various sizes were found stashed at two locations in Sungai Lobak Batu, Selalang and another 600 pieces stashed at five locations in Sungai Kerapu, Selalang.

They seized the logs estimated to be worth about RM385,000, which they believed were illegally extracted as there was no documents to prove they were felled legally.

The logs were then handed over to the Forest Department here for their further action, Salehuddin said.
