Over RM6 million worth of goods seized so far this year

MIRI: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, Sarawak, seized goods worth over RM6 million and compounds of more than RM74,000 for various offences in the period  from January to May 5 this year.

Speaking to reporters after an inspection at the Indoor Stadium Ramadan bazaar here yesterday, its deputy director Hanizam Kechek said from the 27,041 trading premises inspected throughout Sarawak in the same period, 538 premises were found to have flouted the various trading-related offences.

The most number of cases  involved Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 which was 301.

The second is the Weight and Measures Act 1972 which recorded 124 cases, and involved  seizure valued at RM67,705 and compound of RM26,050.

On the Ramadan bazaar here, Hanizam said there are five namely the Indoor Stadium (155 stalls), Morsjaya (60 stalls), Lutong (15 stalls), Saberkas (50 stalls) and Permyjaya (70 stalls). They all have been inspected. He reminded the traders to comply with the laws set by the ministry.

“A trader who does not place a price tag on goods sold during the first week of Ramadan will only be warned. If they still do not comply after that, legal actions will be taken against them.

“Today (May 10), we are more into doing advocacy; to explain to traders to comply with the regulations,” he said, adding that if found guilty, atrader would be fined a maximum of RM100,000 or three years’ jail.

Also present during the inspection were the ministry’s head here Joe Azmi Jamil and 10 other officers.
