Vivian stops PH’s losing streak with a record win

Vivian savouring her moment of triumph.

SANDAKAN: Democratic Action Party (DAP)’s candidate Vivian Wong Shir Yee broke her father’s record when she garnered an even higher majority than the last election with 11,521 majority, despite lower turnout in the by-election.

In the 14th General Election, the late Datuk Stephen Wong Tien Fatt won a majority of 10,098 in a straight  fight with a total of 19,094 votes  cast.

Vivian, 30, who garnered 16,012 votes is now the youngest female Malaysian member of Parliament in the history of the country, after she defeated Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS)  candidate, Datuk Linda Tsen Thau Lin, who garnered 4,491 votes.

All three independent candidates, Hamzah Abdullah (788 votes), Chia Siew Yung (178 votes) and Sulaiman Abdul Samad (126 votes)  lost their deposit of RM10,000.

The election recorded 54.4 percent of turnout, and 234 of spoilt ballots.
