MIRI: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak has so far received at least one application for dark window tints, following the new ruling announced by the Transport Ministry recently.

JPJ Sarawak director Mohd Syafiq Anas Abdullah says the department is currently gathering all applications, before submitting them to a committee that has been appointed.

“We have received one or two applications. The approval (process), however, may take one to two months because it (application) has be filtered, such as the driver’s background to ensure that the applicant does not have any past criminal records,” he said when met during the giveaway of ‘Bubur Lambuk’ to motorists passing JPJ Miri headquarters yesterday.

It was announced that the new tinting ruling would allow private car owners to unlimited visible light transmission (VLT) percentage for rear windshields and passenger windows – meaning they could go as dark as they want.

However, the ruling would only allow 70 per cent VLT for the front windshields, and 50 per cent for the driver side and front passenger side windows.

Meanwhile, on JPJ operation in view of the upcoming Gawai Dayak and Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations, Mohd Syafiq said his team would be carrying operations throughout the period, starting from the two weeks prior to the festivals and ending two weeks after Hari Raya.

This year, Gawai Dayak and Hari Raya Aidilfitri fall within the same week.

“The majority of our enforcement officers are not Muslims, but we have synchronised their leave with the Muslims staff at every JPJ divisions in Sarawak to ensure that our operations would be carried out successfully,” he said.

On the distribution of ‘Bubur Lambuk’, Mohd Syafiq described it as a special programme during the month of Ramadan, to foster closer rapport with the local community.

Some 300 containers of ‘Bubur Lambuk’ were given away yesterday.
