MIRI: Hawkers gave their thumbs up to the recent completion of the RM200,000 new Lutong Sunday Market at Lutong Bazaar.

The new Lutong Sunday Market is a project under Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting’s Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), in collaboration with Miri City Council (MCC).

One of the hawkers, Rameh Uteh, expressed her happiness that they finally had a decent place to trade during Sundays.

“All this while, we had been selling jungle produce at an open space here every Sunday.

“We are delighted that we can finally trade at this new market comfortably,” she told The Borneo Post when met at the Lutong Sunday Market yesterday.

However, she said the place could be better if MCC could provide additional facilities such as public toilets and electricity supply.

Later, Ting officially declared open the Lutong Sunday Market, witnessed by Miri Mayor Adam Yii, deputy mayor Julaihi Mohamad and a group of councillors.

Ting said the project, which kicked off in January this year, reached completion on April 29, adding that the new Sunday Market could accommodate about 70 stalls.

“I am very pleased to see that the traders now have a decent place to sell their jungle produce on Sundays.

“However, it is important for the traders to keep the place clean and neat.”

On the traders’ request to have additional facilities at the market, Ting said he would look into the matter.
