KOTA KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) president Datuk Chin Su Phin said Democratic Action Party (DAP) candidate Vivian Wong Shir Yee’s landslide victory in the Sandakan parliamentary by-election was as expected.

Chin said the people of Sandakan, especially the Chinese voters, have made a wise decision. The outcome of the by-election had sent a strong message that Sabahans no longer wanted Umno’s presence in the State.

He pointed out that former prime minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, had failed in his attempt to sway Malay voters towards the opposition’s candidate during his visit to Sandakan on the eve of polling day.

Chin hoped that DAP would continue to play its role in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government to bring progress to the people of Sandakan and Malaysia following the victorious by-election.

“We have had too many by-elections, excessive politicking and political squabbles in the past year. We should give the PH coalition time and space to administer the country and fulfill its manifesto. It is not fair to demand PH to implement all its election promises because it is not an easy task,” Chin said, adding that many countries took up to two years to evaluate the performance of their government.

Chin also congratulated Wong for garnering more than 11,000 majority votes and hoped that she would do her level best to bring development to Sandakan.

“Despite the political differences between LDP and DAP, our party has decided to fully support Wong in the by-election in the interest of Sabah and the country,” he said.
