KUCHING: The Green Heights/Borneo Garden Neighbourhood Committee successfully concluded its Subsidised Vaccinations and Neutering Programme, with a total of 116 cats and 42 dogs being vaccinated against rabies.

The community service project, spearheaded by the neighbourhood’s Animal Welfare Sub-Committee, was conducted over two Saturdays (May 4 and May 11) at Green Heights Mall’s basement car park.

A total of 121 pets also received core vaccinations, which would protect them from common severe diseases, at a subsidised rate.

In addition, 16 cats and 15 dogs were neutered on-site in a subsidised service provided by experienced veterinarians from Animal Central Veterinary Clinic.

Other services provided were subsidised microchip implant by the Ministry of Local Government and Housing and council licence registration for pets by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) officials, who were present to provide assistance with pet licensing on both occasions.

A total of 28 dogs were registered.

The programme also received the support of Deputy Chief Minister and State Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, with the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak having provided 250 rabisin (anti-rabies) vaccines for dogs and cats.

All in all, 258 animals were brought in during the programme, which was aimed at supporting the ongoing government initiative to eradicate rabies, as well as to educate the public about proper pet care and responsible pet ownership.

It was co-organised with Save Our Strays Kuching, in partnership with the State Disaster Management Committee (Rabies Management).

Other communities throughout Sarawak are encouraged to emulate such community efforts to help contain the rabies outbreak, which has been declared a Level 2 Disaster.
