MIRI: The Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) has introduced the ‘Gerobok Rezeki’ charity programme, where pantry cupboards will be placed in mosques and suraus.

Islamic Religious Department Miri officer Rafaee Morshidi explained that the pantry cupboards were to assist the poor.

“All the food contributions, which are donated by generous people, would be kept in the cupboards and then those in need, particularly the poor, can take the food in the cupboards, which will be placed at mosques and suraus for free,” he said during the programme’s launch on Monday.

Rafaee said 13 mosques and suraus would work with the department to implement the programme.

He added that non-Muslims in need are also welcome to benefit from the programme.

“This is part of the initiative not only to make the holy house as a place to perform prayer, but it is also to serve as a centre to provide welfare service.

“Through this programme, it will enable the Muslim community to participate by giving alms,” he said.

Assistant Minister of Women, Family and Childhood Development Rosey Yunus officiated at the launch.
