SIBU: Express boat passengers are advised to purchase tickets early to avoid congestion in view of the anticipated surge in passenger volume in the run-up to the Gawai Dayak celebration.
Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) Sibu assistant controller Hatta Morshidi, who gave this advice, said this was to avoid last minute rush.
“Even now there are already passengers who have bought their tickets to avoid congestion,” he said when contacted yesterday.
He noted that in previous years, there had been a surge in the number of passengers one week before the festival, adding that the Sibu/Song/Kapit routes would be busy in the run-up to Gawai Dayak celebration.
To a question, he said extra trips would be granted if there were requests and demand.
Observation at Sibu Express Boat Terminal yesterday, noted the ‘balik kampung’ crowd had yet to pick up steam.
For the record, Sibu Express Boat Terminal handles about 2,000 passengers a day, with the figure surging to about 8,000 daily in the run-up to Gawai Dayak.
Meanwhile, there will be an integrated operation by the various enforcement agencies namely Sarawak Rivers Board, Marine Police, Marine Department, Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs and Rela.
The first phase of the operation will be carried out from May 24 to 30 while the second phase commences from June 3 to 9, Hatta said.
