MIRI: SMK Riam teams had a successful outing during the recent World Young Inventors Exhibition (WYIE) held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) where their invention won a gold medal.

Organised by International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX), the competition from May 2 to 4 saw the participation of 400 teams from China, Hong Kong, Laos, Indonesia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Australia, South Korea and Malaysia.

The school’s Team Tborneo comprising Form Two students Natalie Gituen Liso, Macryean Ghaney Jawie and Law Zhe Yen came up with a new flavouring product made from ‘Daun Tubu’ (whose scientific name is pycnarrhena tametacta) that could potentially offer a new alternative for monosodium glutamate (MSG).

Meanwhile, the school’s Team Yucava comprising Form Three students Daniel Dennis and Nurnaziha Hasmady invented a biodegradable spoon that was free from chemical and can be even be used as fertiliser.

The invention won Malaysian Young Inventors Best Invention Award in Secondary School Category.

“The students who are members of the school’s Young Innovators Club, have shown their creativity and innovative talents in their invention and their win was testament of their dedication in bringing their best creation to the international competition,” said school principal Normah Abdul Latiff in a press release here yesterday.

She also commended teachers Law Sie Siek and Forinna Lanity Rosini for dedicating their time and energy in guiding and tutoring the teams for several months prior to the competition.

“This historic success is a meaningful one as it introduced SMK Riam to more people to learn about our academic and co-curriculum performances,” said Normah.

She hoped that the victory would continue to encourage more students to keep giving their best especially by becoming actively involved in the 4Cs learning model – collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and communication.

Normah also took the opportunity to thank Sibuti MP Lukanisma Awang Sauni, Lambir assemblyman Ripin Lamat, senator Alan Ling and the school’s parent-teacher association (PTA) who had contributed financially to cover
the teams’ expenses in Kuala Lumpur.

“Without their assistance, this trip would have been one faced with much difficulty,” she said.
