KUCHING: Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib celebrated the breaking of fast with 85 orphans at Grand Margherita Hotel here on Friday.

During the event Taib and Raghad handed over contributions in the form of ‘duit raya’ to the orphans as well as carried out the Maghrib, Isyak and Tarawih prayers.

The event was organised by Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) to bring cheer to the orphans as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.

The orphans came from the Toh Puan Hajah Norkiah Children’s Home here and Datuk Ajibah Abol Children’s Home in Sri Aman.

“This programme is part of the CSR initiatives that we have organised on May 10 which involved over 100 orphans from the Laila Taib Welfare Complex which had been attended by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife Datin Patinggi Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang,” said PPES Sarawak chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain in a press statement yesterday.

He added that the children had the chance to feast at the hotel’s popular Ramadan buffet.

“PPES and its subsidiaries are very happy to be able to bring some cheer to these children, and this is our way of showing support to the less fortunate community,” Abdul Aziz stated.

Also present were Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Talib Zulpilip, SEDC general manager Abdul Hadi Abdul Kadir and other guests.

PPES and its subsidiaries have previously organised a charity programme Love-In-The-Box to benefit special needs children from the Society for Parents of Children with Special Needs (Pibakat) on February 22.

The charity programme is one of the CSR initiatives from PPES. Other programmes under PPES include the ‘Majlis Belaian Kasih’ and ‘Majlis Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri’ with primary school students throughout Kuching.
