KUCHING: Sarawak’s golf prodigy Mirabel Ting Ern Hui won her second international title at the Ciputra Golfpreneur Junior World Championships at Damai Indah Golf and Country Club in Jakarta, Indonesia on Friday.

The 13-year old ace from Miri, who is now studying and playing golf at the Hills Golf Academy in Australia, carded a one-under 71 for her final round for a total of a five-over 221 total to lift the Girls B (12-14 years old) crown.

Mirabel registered a six-over 78 and a par 72 in the first and second round respectively and finished one stroke ahead of Thailand’s Natachanok Tunwannarux while Eagle Ace Superal of the Philippines was third on 223.

Her impressive total score placed her joint-second in the overall girls standings which included competitors from Group A (15-18 years old).

Starting the last round three strokes behind Eagle, she played solid par golf with the birdie putts just not wanting to drop, playing in the group ahead of the Filipina.

She had to fight very hard for a par on the reachable par five 17th to remain three strokes behind in a tie for second eventually holing a tricky five-foot putt to salvage her par. Meanwhile, the leader ended making a mess of the 16th hole eventually carding a triple bogie 7 making it a three-way tie at the top with Natachanok.

Mirabel was then rewarded for her solid play and patience as she birdied the demanding 18th hole while minutes later Eagle drove into the tussock grass and went on to make a bogie, allowing Mirabel to win her division.

“I really had so much fun this week. Thank you to my parents who flew all the way from Miri just to watch me play in this tournament, she said.

In March this year, Mirabel helped the Malaysian team finish in a respectable joint eighth in the Asia-Pacific Women’s Team Championship also known as the Queen Sirikit Cup in Australia.

She became the youngest golfer to win a Malaysia Golf Association sanctioned event, the Perak Amateur Open last August.

Mirabel also claimed the Sabah Amateur Open, Ambank Sportexcel International Junior Championship and the Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup.

Her next upcoming tournaments include the 117th Malaysian Amateur Open at Kelab Golf Sarawak, Petra Jaya from June 20 to 23 and the European Young Masters at the Golf & Spa Kuneticka Hora, Czech Republic from July 25 to 27.

Meanwhile, at the Ciputra Golfpreneur Junior World Championships, Mirabel’s brother Malcolm Ting Siong Hung was the best placed Malaysian in 10th spot in Boys A, Jayden Ng Wei Jiat was third in Boys B and Allycia Gan Pheik Wen was ninth in Girls A.
