NEW DELHI: India’s President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday appointed Narendra Modi as the country’s prime minister for a second term and asked him to suggest the date and time of the formal swearing-in ceremony, said a statement from the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 303 members in the newly-elected lower house of parliament Lok Sabha, giving it a strong majority.

Along with its allies, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has 353 members of parliament (MPs) in the 545-member chamber.

The opposition Indian National Congress led by Rahul Gandhi managed to win only 52 seats in the recently-held general election. – Bernama
