KUCHING: Sarawak government is looking into amending the Sarawak Cultural Heritage Ordinance 1993, while trying to identify historic sites in Kuching to apply for listing as United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) World Heritage Site.

“Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah will be looking into this (amending Sarawak Cultural Heritage Ordinance 1993) and there’s a possibility we may table a new law on heritage in the coming (State Legislative Assembly) session,” said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg yesterday.

He said certain streets in Penang had fulfilled the requirements set to be declared as Unesco World Heritage Site, while Sarawak government was still identifying heritage sites in this (Kuching) city.

“Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) and the Sarawak government are identifying historical sites in the city to be listed as Unesco World Heritage Site,” he said after launching the ‘India Street Raya Gawai Bazaar’ at India Street Pedestrian Mall here yesterday.
