KUCHING: The rights of Sarawak will be further protected and safeguarded now that the state has its own coalition through Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

SUPP president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said the state coalition can protect and safeguard Sarawak’s rights better than Pakatan Harapan (PH).

“Previously, we were part of the national coalition so everything we do requires consensus such as when we want to fight for Sarawak, they said we cannot just focus on Sarawak.

“But now that we are a state coalition, whatever we need to fight for the state, we will fight all the way because our focus is Sarawak first,” he told reporters when met after officiating SUPP 60th Anniversary Flag Raising Ceremony at the party’s headquarters today.

He cited an example where Democratic Action Party (DAP) treasurer Loh Ee Eng was appointed as an assemblyman in Sabah despite being a non-Sabahan.

“If u look at this case, the nominated assemblyman for Sabah is from Penang. So it’s no longer Sabah for Sabahan but Penang for Sabahan,” he quipped.

He stressed that if PH were to take over the Sarawak government, it is not impossible that they might appoint a non-Sarawakian to become the next chief minister.

“What’s stopping it from being impossible? If they have the majority, they control the federal government and if they control the state government, finish lor. We ‘tengok sahaja’.

“Sabah has already started by appointed an assemblyman who originates from Penang. It’s as if there are no Sabahans qualified for the position,” he said.

Meanwhile, when informed that PH has formed a committee under state PKR chairman Baru Bian to prepare for the coming State Election, Dr Sim said the component parties under GPS have always formed committees for the purpose.

“But the thing is, it is not about forming the committees because you want to build up and look at your track record, your sincerity and whether or not you keep your promises,” he emphasised.
