CM to attend state-level Gawai Dayak do

KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg will attend the state-level Gawai Dayak gathering on Saturday (June 15) at Imperial Hotel here.

The main organising committee led by chairman Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas extended the invitation to Abang Johari during a courtesy call yesterday.

“We invited the Chief Minister so that he can, among other things, advise the Dayak community on the role they can play in strengthening ties and unity among all Sarawakians in the light of the current situation,” Uggah said in a statement yesterday.

He added that Abang Johari was also invited to be guest of honour at another Gawai Dayak function on Tuesday (June 18) organised by the Kuching Division of Dayak Iban community leaders.

“We have one Iban temenggong, one pemanca, seven penghulu, and about 40 tuai rumah in the Kuching Division, and they will bring various problems and issues faced by the community such as housing, education, social, and other issues to the Chief Minister’s attention,” Uggah stated.

Accompanying Uggah during the courtesy call were committee members Minister of Education, Science and Technological Research Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong; Minister of Utilities Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom; Assistant Minister of Native Land Development Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn; Assistant Minister of Transportation Datuk Dr Jerip Susil; Assistant Minister of Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil; Kapit member of parliament Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi; State Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Datuk Gerawat Gala; Opar assemblyman Datuk Ranum Mina; Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep; Kedup assemblyman Martin Ben; Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus; and Acting Deputy State Secretary Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik.

Meanwhile, Kampung Pichin longhouse in Serian Division will host the closing of this year’s state-level Gawai Dayak celebration on June 29.

Uggah is expected to officiate at the event.

For Bau District, the closing will be held at the Bau Civic Centre on June 22.

This year’s state-level Gawai Dayak celebration was held at Annah Rais longhouse and Kampung Jagoi Duyoh in Bau District on May 31 and June 1, as well as Kampung Pueh in Lundu on June 2.
