KUCHING: Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah believes that this year’s Kuching Marathon could attract up to 15,000 participants.
Over 9,000 runners so far have registered for the international event on Aug 18.
“At the moment, there are more than 9,000 runners who have registered for the event, where about 10 per cent of them are from outside the country, and I believe the number will increase up to 15,000 on the day itself,” Abdul Karim told reporters yesterday to announce the event. Records show that no past edition of the event had ever reached beyond 10,000 runners.
Among those who have registered are participants from countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, China, Japan, Indonesia, Kenya, Taiwan, the Philippines and Singapore.
The Kuching Marathon is among three other marathon events in the country – Penang Bridge Run, Standard Chartered Run and Sabah Borneo Run – to have earned accreditation from the Association of International Marathon (AIM).
“An international full marathon event like Kuching marathon 2019 will undoubtedly promote Kuching as one of the outstanding marathon cities in the world map and attract international tourists to come to Kuching and serve as a catalyst to spur business activities,” the minister stressed.
The event has four categories – 42.195km, 21km, 10km and 5km – with the starting and finishing point at Padang Merdeka. The 5km race is a fun run which reach out to locals who can participate and bring family members.
Also present at yesterday’s press conference was Kuching City North Hall (DBKU) Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai.
