Barge, crane seized in swoop on illegal sand extraction

The barge and crane used for illegal sand extraction at Baram river that were seized by Miri Land and Survey Department.

MIRI: The Miri Division Land and Survey Department enforcement unit yesterday swooped down on illegal removal of river sand at Baram river, seizing a barge and a crane in the process.

The illegal sand extraction near Marudi was conducted without approval from the divisional Land and Survey Department.

The department, in a statement, said the illegal activity was detected during surveillance by a patrol team, adding the case is being investigated under Section 32A of Sarawak Land Code (Chapter 81) for removal of rock materials without permit.

The department advised those who wish to conduct extraction or removal of earth to refer to the nearest Land and Survey Department to avoid falling foul with the law.
