KUCHING: The Social Security Organisation (Socso) is holding a month-long programme to enable taxi, e-hailing and bus drivers who have yet to register with Socso to do so until July 31.

Part-time or full-time drivers are required to register with Socso as stipulated under Section 11 of the Self-Employment Social Security Act 2017.

Based on Socso Sarawak’s statistics until June this year, a total of 807 drivers had registered with the agency since the Act came into effect on June 1, 2017.

Of the total, 148 drivers had registered at the Kuching office, said Socso state director Phillip Sangkan in a statement.

“Socso believes there are still drivers out there who have yet to register with us.

“Those who fail to register with Socso as stipulated under the Act may face a maximum compound of RM5,000,” he stressed.

Phillip pointed out that his enforcement team will begin taking action against those who failed to register with Socso from Aug 1 this year.

Once the enforcement commences, he said offenders might be fined an amount not exceeding RM10,000 or face jail time of not more than two years or both, upon conviction.

As such, he called upon drivers who had yet to register with Socso to do so before or by July 31.

Meanwhile, the Socso enforcement team conducted an ‘Ops Pemutihan’ on its Self-Employed Scheme at several locations in Kuching and Kota Samarahan yesterday.

Socso officers handed out flyers to taxi, e-hailing and bus drivers as well as briefed them on the scheme.
