MIRI: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg says Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is using its ‘own style’ to regain the state’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

Speaking during the launching of GPS Bekenu and Lambir branches at Bekenu multipurpose court yesterday, he told the crowd that the coalition is the platform for the people to continue the mission started by the late chief minister Pehin Sri Adenan Satem.

“GPS is the platform for us to defend and restore our state’s rights as enshrined in MA63.

“Let us go with our own style and continue to fight for the future of our children,” he said.

He said it was important that Sarawakians not forget the message left behind by Adenan, which was to look after Sarawak.

“The event today (Saturday) has reminded us of our mission and the need for us to continue the effort to uplift the dignity of Sarawakians.”

Abang Johari, who is also GPS chairman, reminded GPS members to remain united in the interest of the state, adding this would enable Sarawak to continue its progress.

In its effort to enhance the development of the state, he said the government will continue to improve basic infrastructure and amenities, including the upgrading of schools.

The event also saw Abang Johari approve the Niah Waterfront project for Batu Niah.

He said the people in Batu Niah and its surrounding areas can expect more economic impact as the government is currently pushing for Niah Caves to be listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site.

“This is why the state government wants to improve the facilities for the (Niah) national park, including building a bridge crossing the Niah river as well as providing a path which can be accessible by buggy car to enable tourists to explore the national park in a more convenient way,” he said.

Among those present yesterday were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Assistant Minister of Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, Assistant Minister of Women, Family and Childhood Development Rosey Yunus, Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni, Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting, Lambir assemblyman Ripin Lamat and Samalaju assemblyman Majang Renggi.
