KUCHING: More than 1,000 members and supporters are expected at a dinner themed ‘Sarawak Baru’ or ‘A New Sarawak’ hosted by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) Sarawak.

The event, which is scheduled to take place at Imperial Hotel here on July 28, aims to kick start the state PH’s election campaign for the next state polls, due by mid-2021.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is national PH chairman, is be expected at the dinner.

National PH leaders who have confirmed their attendance are Minister of Home Affairs Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Minister of Defence Mohamad Sabu and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) de-facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In announcing this at a press conference here yesterday, PH Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen said the dinner is meant to raise funds for the state PH.

He said the dinner was initially scheduled for July 27 but the date was changed after some discussion with the aforementioned national leaders.

“Most of them will be available on July 28. As such, we have amended the date,” he said at the Democratic Action Party (DAP) headquarters here.

Chong, who is Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs and DAP Sarawak chairman, is appealing to supporters to buy tickets to attend the dinner.

Tickets for ‘A New Sarawak’ dinner are sold at RM400 or RM600 per table. VIP tables are up for grabs through a form of donation.

Chong said VIP tables are not priced and donors could give an amount to support the fund-raiser.

“The three national leaders are our speakers at the dinner … Our national leaders will share with us the political development of our country,” he added.

Asked whether national DAP leaders would be expected, Chong said he is the national DAP vice chairman.

Pressed if DAP leaders from Peninsular Malaysia such as Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng or Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang would be present, he replied: “We’ll see how to arrange the schedule.”
