MIRI: A jobless man arrested on suspicion of drug abuse was ordered by the Sessions Court here to be remanded for four days.

The order was issued by Judge Steve Ritikos after allowing a remand application by assistant investigating officer Sgt Norizam Januwi from Marudi police station.

In his application, Norizam said that acting on information received, a team of police headed by ASP Roslan Mat Kib raided a workers’ quarters at a plantation in Baram.

He said during the 2pm raid last July 15, the police detained a man on suspicion of drug abuse.

However, the police did not find anything illegal on him but during further inspection in his bedroom the police found substance believed to be dangerous drug methamphetamine with a gross weight of 33.55 grams.

The item was seized to be used as evidence and the suspect was brought to Marudi police station for further action.

Norizam said a seven-day remand according to Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code was needed on the 53-year-old suspect from Long Atip, Apoh, Baram to enable the police carry out thorough investigation on the case.

Apart from that, the police also needed time to bring the suspect to the crime scene which is a day’s journey from Marudi police station and releasing the suspect early might jeopardise police investigation.

However, the court only allowed a four-day remand on the suspect until July 20.
