Catholic Welfare Services donate immediate aid to fire victims

MIRI: Catholic Welfare Services (CWS) Miri recently donated cash, food, used clothing and other daily essentials to fire victims of Long Palai in Baram.

Led by its chairman Marcus Hugo Matu, CWS team drove through hilly tortuous timber track before crossing Ulu Baram River in a small ‘sampan’ to reach the interior of Baram to present the donation from Catholics in Miri to longhouse headman Gerald Takiling, witnessed by CWS vice chairman Alexius Nayang Munan and other members.

About 20 residents were rendered homeless after one of the five rows of longhouses in Long Palai, Baram, consisting five doors were destroyed in the 5am incident on July 13.

A generator and a water tank were also destroyed

No casualties were reported. The victims are temporarily putting up with their relatives near the longhouse.

The cause of the fire and losses to properties have yet to be ascertained.
