KUCHING: Fourteen students of Chinese origin from Chung Hua Middle Schools (CHMS) have been offered scholarship to study at a university in China.

The students, from Kuching, Sibu, Sarikei, Miri and Bintulu, will leave for China next month.

Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian presented the scholarship to the students at CHMS No 1 in Pending, in the presence of Cheng Guangzhong, China’s Consul General in
Kuching.

Dr Sim lauded the initiative to provide an opportunity for the students to study in China.

“We see this as an opportunity for Sarawak students to further their studies in China.

“Such opportunity should be taken up,” Dr Sim said.

He also reminded the students to seriously pursue their studies, and be ambassadors for the state.

“When you are there (in China), do not forget that you are Sarawakians, and when you have completed your studies, do come back to Sarawak and help,” he said.

Dr Sim also hoped that a university from China would set up a campus in Sarawak to provide more studying opportunities for Sarawakians.

Cheng, meanwhile, said the scholarship had been increased from RM140,000 to RM150,000 this year, for 14 Chinese and two Bumiputera students.
