SIBU: About 50 jumpers are expected to take the leap from Sarawak’s tallest building – the 126-metre tall Wisma Sanyan during the coming Sibu International BASE Jump and Carnival 2019.

Sibu Resident Charles Siaw recalled there were 34 jumpers last year.

“But this year, we expect more – around 50 (jumpers),” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

The Sibu International BASE Jump which enters its 11th year, made its debut in 2009.

The event will be held from Sept 13 till 22 at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang, but the jumping activities itself will commence from Sept 19 till 22.

It is organised by Divisional Tourism Task Group (DTTG) Sibu with various strategic partners, comprising government agencies, private sector and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

The opening ceremony will be on Sept 18.

Side activities at the 10-day event will include fashion shows, Kebaya pageant and children singing competitions.

Among the main objectives are to promote Sibu as a venue for extreme sports as well as to introduce various places of interest in Sibu.

“Therefore, I hope with this tourism event in Sibu, it will help to boost tourism economy in Sibu.

“Sibu also has potential to become city of attraction for extreme sports lovers,” Siaw said.
