KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato James Chan said he has not heard of any news pertaining to the extension of his service, which will expire this Aug 31.

According to him, the Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has not given any indication on whether his service will be extended or a new person will be appointed to the post.

“I always say that I leave it to the chief minister, the cabinet and the minister in charge Minister of Local Government and Housing (Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian) to decide, but at the moment I don’t know,” he told reporters today at MBKS conference room.

He was asked whether he has heard of anything from Abang Johari pertaining to his mayorship with MBKS, after chairing a meeting with the councilors.

“I serve on term to term basis and the job is not mine, but the prerogative of the state government. I have served for 11 years (with MBKS), so there may be others who can take over,” Chan pointed out.

On July 30, Abang Johari, when asked by reporters after the swearing in ceremony of councilors for all the 24 local councils in the state, said the mayor’s post in MBKS would be made known soon.

“They will be be appointed soon, very soon. The same for Kuching City North Hall (DBKU), their term only ends at the end of August this year,” the chief minister was quoted as saying.
