Quarry worker dies in fire at quarry workers’ quarters in Stapang

A fireman dousing the fire at the workers’ quarters of a quarry in Stapang near Sibu yesterday.

SIBU: A 40-something quarry worker died of suspected shortness of breath following a fire which destroyed two blocks of workers’ quarters of a quarry in Stapang near here yesterday.

The man, identified as Jack Jubang died while he was being transported to a health clinic in Nanga Sekuau resettlement scheme, Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre said in a statement yesterday.

He was seen moving things out of the burning quarters.

In the incident happened at about 6pm, two workers’ quarters blocks with 29 doors that housed 61 quarry workers and their families were completely razed.

Bomba Sungai Merah deployed 14 firemen with one fire engine, a four-wheel-drive and three lorries to the scene after they received a distress call at 6.13pm.

They managed to prevent the fire from spreading to another block with 17 doors located nearby.

Bomba managed to get the fire under control at about 7.45pm.
