MIRI: The Customs Department ambushed a house in Desa Pujut 2, Bandar Baru Permyjaya here on Tuesday and seized various types of contraband cigarettes and alcoholic drinks.

Sarawak Customs director Datuk Sharifah Halimah Tuanku Taha in a press statement today, said acting on information, an enforcement team from the Miri Customs Department ambushed the house at around 10.30am.

“Upon checking the house, the enforcement team found 24,000 sticks of various types of cigarettes and 1,455.58 litres of alcoholic drinks.

“These contraband were kept in one of the bedrooms and in the living room,” said Sharifah Halimah.

The contraband seized were estimated to worth RM9,529.47 and excise duty amounting to RM 44,980.38.

According to her, the team also arrested a man in the house to assist in the investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 135 of Customs Act 1967. If convicted, the offender could be fined 10 times the value of the goods seized or a RM100,000-fine whichever is the higher, or a jail term of not less than six months and not more than five years or both.
