KUCHING: A dog owner here was fined RM2,000 in default a month jail for negligence after his pet attacked a neighbour.

George Liu Ee Pow from Batu Kawa pleaded guilty to the charge before Magistrate Mohd Syukri Mokhtar today.

The offence was committed at Lorong 5D Jalan Song around 3.30pm on Sept 29, last year.

According to the brief facts of the case, Liu had forgotten to close the front gate of his house when he returned home in a rush to collect some items.

His dog managed to escape from the house compound and entered his neighbour’s house which was opened.

The neighbour was in the dining area when the dog attacked.

As a result of the attack, the neighbour was badly injured and had to be treated at the Sarawak General Hospital here.

The neighbour, who lodged a police report after the incident, had initially wanted to withdraw the police report against Liu, but the court had rejected the neighbour’s application and imposed the sentence against Liu.

Liu was charged under Section 289 of Penal Code which provided for a maximum penalty of six months in jail or a fine of RM2,000 or both, upon conviction.

Inspector Nelson Ensit prosecuted while Liu was not represented.
