MIRI: Pustaka Negeri Sarawak Miri is seeking to establish reading corners for communities in Bintulu Division.

Regional manager Salina Zawawi recently paid courtesy calls on Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon and Samalaju assemblyman Majang Renggi to discuss possible collaborations.

Both assemblymen pledged to assist in identifying areas in their constituencies for the initiative.

“We are hoping that with the collaboration and continuous support from the community leaders in creating more reading corners, it would give better chances for the people to get education and valuable information,” Salina said in a press release yesterday.

“Thus it is good to know that our leaders are willing to give their full support in making this initiative a reality.”

She pointed out that reading plays an important role in lifelong learning and as such the reading areas should provide for children and adults.

“We strongly believe the more we give reading facilities to the communities, the more things they will learn and know, and the more confidence they will gain, and also improve the literacy rate in the country.”

Reading corners is a programme to promote and develop a reading culture, getting communities to read with their families, as well as to increase knowledge and widen their perspectives through books.
