KUCHING: Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii visited a patient who was recently involved in a car accident that caused her to be paraplegic (paralysis of lower limbs) at Sarawak General Hospital on Tuesday.

He said the 26-year-old also suffers from other complications due to an injury to her spine.

“She was also about 32 weeks pregnant with her fist child at the time of the accident and due to the impact, it not only risked her life but also that of her unborn child.

“However, we are grateful that not only is the patient now safe after her surgery, but her baby in her womb is also safe and under constant monitoring of her dedicated doctors,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Dr Yii, who was alerted of the patient’s condition by her in-laws through social media, said her family sought his assistance in acquiring medical equipment for the patient’s treatment and recovery.

Responding to their appeal, he donated a special lightweight detachable wheelchair and commode chair in addition to donating some financial contributions to help the patient.

“I was informed by the in-laws that the patient has always been a very cheerful, kind and active person and that both she and her husband were looking forward to celebrating their first wedding anniversary on top of welcoming their bundle of joy.

“However, due to her injury, there will be a lot of adjustment to her life including the responsibility of raising her child.

“It may be a long journey of recovery ahead, but I am glad she is in good spirits and has a team of dedicated doctors, nurses, physiotherapists as well as family members who are supporting her through it all,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, Dr Yii and Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong also visited the house gutted by fire at Kenyalang Park on Tuesday to hand over some compassionate funds from Pakatan Harapan (PH) government to the fire victims

The incident took place last Friday which left a single-storey terrace house belonging to a family of nine, 70 per cent damaged.

The two elected representatives also brought the victims to Trienekens to apply for a large garbage bin to be sent to the site so as to enable them to dispose of  the fire debris.

“DAP will continue to monitor the different needs of the public and we will try to do our best to meet them as part of our efforts to build a caring community in Kuching,” said Dr Yii.
