KUALA TERENGGANU: His strategy to sell durians using social media platforms has enabled trader Mohamad Afiq Jaizzuan Jamal earning more than RM100,000 during the current durian season.

Mohamad Afiq Jaizzuan, 26, from Bukit Payong, Marang, who regularly carried out live stream on Facebook as well as putting up special promotions on WhatsApp application, has been involved in selling durians for the past five years with a RM25,000 capital to supply the king of fruits from Segamat, Johor.

Assisted by 10 workers, Mohd Afiq would commute to Johor daily and would sell between 10 and 15 tonnes of durians near the Sultan Mahmud Airport in Kuala Nerus.

Mohamad Afiq Jaizzuan who received guidance from the Terengganu Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) was grateful that his durians, sometimes weighing up to 20 tonnes, received overwhelming response every time he participated in FAMA sales programmes around Kuala Terengganu.

“In my small way to express my gratitude, today I launched a special price promotion of just RM5 per kilogramme (kg) for durians (of different varieties) compared to the usual price of between RM8 and RM10 per kg.

“I hope FAMA will continue to help young entrepreneurs like myself to market their durians at strategic locations such as the farmers’ markets, more often in the future,” he said.

He was met by reporters at the launch of Durian Day and the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry’s Meet-Customers Day, officiated by FAMA chairman Ishak Ismail held here yesterday.

Meanwhile, Ishak said the success of FAMA-guided entrepreneurs such as Mohd Afiq Jaizzuan was a source of pride for the agency and it also proved that agriculture could boost the economy of country’s youths if taken seriously.

“There are 63,000 agro-entrepreneurs registered with FAMA nationwide and they have benefited from organising various direct sales programmes to FAMA’s clients thus far.

“We assist them in various aspects including logistics, contract farming and direct sales to buyers at FAMA outlets such as People’s Agrobazaar, and My Farm Outlet nationwide where their revenue has recorded an increase of up to 40 per cent through the sales,” he said. – Bernama
