SMK Subis enters national-level Dengue Patrol programme

MIRI: SMK Subis here has qualified itself to the national-level Dengue Patrol 2019 programme, that aims to educate students and the public on the dangers of dengue and to instil a sense of responsibility in adopting dengue prevention methods.

Teacher in charge of the programme for the school, Rangis Intai, said SMK Subis is among the four secondary schools in Sarawak that qualify for the national-level competition which runs from June to September this year. The other schools are SMK Agama Miri, SMK Agama Kuching and SMK Baru Bintulu.

“We are urging the public, particularly the local community, to continue supporting our 40 students and 12 teachers involved in the programme so that they can bring glory for the school and Sarawak in general. The gold prize is RM5,000 and trophy,” Rangis said when contacted yesterday.

He said among the activities held so far were ‘gotong royong’ at three longhouses in Batu Niah; namely Rumah Alias ​​Bon, Rumah Cr Changgai Dali Sungai Sah and Rumah Muyang where all the over 500 villagers gave a resounding support to their activities.

As part of the gotong royong programme, the SMK Subis Dengue Patrol gave talks to the villagers as well to residents of Batu Niah bazaar on ways to keep the environment free of aedes mosquitoes – carrier of dengue fever – and the danger of the disease which could bring death.

They will give a talk on dengue on Aug 25 as part of the Merdeka Month programme, organised in collaboration with RTM Miri, at the Miri Central Park. Other activities to be held from 6am to noon are aerobic, musical performances and sajak declamation.

“The dengue campaign called ‘Nadai Aedes Nadai Denggi’ is a community activity conducted to expose the public to the dangers of dengue and to urge them to eradicate aedes.

“It is in response to the call of the Ministry of Health in partnership with the Ministry of Education to ensure that the residential areas are kept clean and free of aedes mosquitoes,” he said.

The annual national public awareness programme organised by the Education Ministry in collaboration with the Health Ministry is to equip and empower students as icon educators and influential people by acting as ambassadors on prevention of dengue.
